Is The Machine Ready To Play?
You’ll need to develop an instinct for knowing whether a machine is worth playing on. Never start
playing a machine which has recently paid out a big win – you’ll be throwing your money away. Try
to move in on a machine recently vacated by an ‘enthusiastic and unsuccessful amateur’ –
someone who looked like they put plenty of money in but didn’t really know what they were doing.
The first thing to look for is whether the machine is ‘backing’. This is when the hopper or tubes
where the prizes are paid from are full, indicating that the machine is ready for a big payout. On
some machines you can see this by looking through the gaps between the reels at the tubes
where the takings are stored. If you can’t tell by doing this, you may need to put a few coins in. If
they fall straight down to the cashbox at the bottom of the machine, rather than going into the
tubes/hopper, then the machine is ‘backing’ and there-fore ready to play. (Note: establishments
sometimes refill machines to give the impression that a jackpot is imminent. You’ll need to rely on
your own judgement and observations to decide whether this is the case.) If the machine isn’t
backing, look for another machine.
An obvious but necessary tip is that, in any playing session, you should stick to playing the same
machine. Remember that machines are programmed to pay back at least 72 per cent of their
takings back in cash, but you’ll only get the big jackpots if you stay with one single machine for
long enough.

Insider Secrets To Milk The Machines
The real difference between someone who has mastered a machine and someone who hasn’t, is
that the ‘master’ will know what buttons to press and when, and which features will induce a
jackpot. The master will also know when the machine is ready to go into ‘red/invincible’ mode (see
below), and how much money a streak will generate. That’s why we recommend getting further
information on the specific machine you intend to play.
But happily, there are many tactics which are common to fruit machines of most types. The
following ‘insider secrets’ will give you an advantage over the rank amateurs:
1 Forcing
This is the basic tactic used to make a fruit machine pay out a big win. In other words, whenever
you’re offered a choice between a small cash win or a gamble, you always gamble. By doing this
you can eventually force the machine into making a jackpot payout – and perhaps go into a streak
where it pays lots lots of wins in a short period.
2. Cancel Button
When you play a feature try holding down the Cancel button. Sometimes this slows down the
lights, giving you more time to make a correct selection. Often, on machines which have a
High/Low feature, holding down the Cancel button will reveal the next number, allowing you to
make the right decision.
3. Triple Hold
Here’s a ‘hidden feature’ that works on some slot machines. You may be in a position where
you’re allowed to hold two matching features on the Win line, with the offer of a spin on the third
reel. Do this, and you may be offered a second spin. Spin again, while holding the two matching
reels. If you’re offered a third spin, do so while holding the matching reels – this should result in an
automatic win. On some machines you may need to do this a fourth time for an automatic win.
4. Red Or Invincible Mode
Try to watch out for when your machine is about to go into Red or Invincible Mode. This is
indicated by the machine logo either changing colour or starting to flash. When a machine goes
into this mode you are guaranteed the jackpot, although often you can make the machine pay
further jackpots (see Triple Hold).
5. Use The Invisible Hold After A Jackpot
If you score a jackpot and you still have a few credits left, don’t just press Start. Press all three
Hold buttons instead. Some machines have an ‘invisible hold’ feature which gives you another
jackpot if you hold all three reels. If it works, keep going – you may be able to win up to three
jackpots by doing this.
