The first Bingo games were played in Europe during the 1500's. It was originated from an Italian game called "Lo Giuoco Lotto Italia". The then game spread to other places like France and Germany.

Bingo was also previously known as Beano in North America. The reason why it was called Beano is because players would mark their numbers off the playing cards with beans. “Beano!” was yelled when someone hit the correct pattern. The first Beano game was brought to North America at a Carnival in Atlanta, Georgia in 1929. The father of Bingo was a toy salesman named Edwin Lowe. During a Beano game he accidentally heard someone yell "Bingo". That's when the term "Bingo" started. Lowe thought that the term "Bingo" sounds a bit better than "Beano" for marketing purposes.

Lowe came up with the first bingo game. He tried it out with his friends whom he invited over to his apartment. Lowe sold his bingo products for $1 per 12 cards and $2 per 24 cards. However, there were always a lot of winners at the end of a bingo game. So he decided to search for a partner that would help him scrutinize all the mathematical possibilities.

Lowe met with a Maths professor from the University of Columbia, Carl Leffler. They added more squares to a bingo card and came up with a total of 6,000 different combinations. Catholic priests asked Lowe to use the game in churches for fund raising. The game then spread thought out the globe and became one of the most favorite card games.

Nowadays bingo has moved online. The online bingo market across the world is enormous. There are a number of reasons why the online version of the game is so popular, one being that you don’t have to leave your house to play. Online bingo provides people with a great social environment. Bingo has, since the outset been a social game. In the early days of online bingo players were not able to communicate with each other but nowadays players have the opportunity to interact as if they are all in a room together. This is the way bingo should be.

Compared to other forms on online gambling, bingo offers very high odds of payout. Most bingo players will during their gaming career, experience winnings. Most consider bingo to be a soft form of gambling. This is the case because it is possible to play bingo with tiny stakes, sometimes as little a one penny.

Online bingo’s popularity was boosted considerably by the introduction of a nationwide smoking ban in the UK. This forced many players out of the land based bingo halls and into the online bingo rooms.

So there you have it, from a game called Beano to a game called bingo and then a game which we can all access online!
