A large amount of folk seem to think the game of bingo has to do with the song about the dog Bingo we all sang as kids, but this is not the case, not by a long shot. The game we all like playing with those smart cards and ink dabbers has a way more engaging history, which started in Italy in the 1500s. In those games Bingo was called Lo Giuco del Lotto D'Italia and instead of ink dots beans were used to mark cards, and rather than yelling Bingo! they yelled Beano! Bingo is one of the most wide-reaching games to date and exists all around the globe in numerous forms and serves many purposes. Among them is fundraising for churches, carnival games, and obviously, a game buddies and relatives can enjoy in private .

In the latter 1700s the game moved from Italy to France where it was known as Le Lotto. In France it was often seen as a hobby for wealthy noblemen. At this time the Bingo card typically had 9 columns and 3 rows with 4 free spaces per row. The caller would reach into a bag and pick out wooden chips numbered from one through ninety and the players would then cover up the called numbers on their cards with beans. The first player to fill in a complete row was considered the winner. In Germany Bingo was used as a teaching tool for children. Various things were taught to youngsters including spelling and maths. This is the start of using a board game format to educate kids. It revolutionized learning in many aspects and continues to be practiced today.

So now that we have covered the history of bingo in Europe how about we go over the way the game interpreted to an American audience. On arrival in America in the 1920s Bingo was called Beano and it is believed it was first played in the Atlanta, Georgia area. By pure happenstance a man who had recently had serious fiscal difficulties because of the stock exchange crash by the name of Edwin Lowe discovered the game while traveling. He made a decision he would modify it to be sold as a game and not only a public event. Lowe was an aspiring toy salesman from NY City who attended a carnival in Georgia where the game was being played. He noted it joining all kinds of folks in an excited manner he had not seen before. Lowe moved close to the caller and observed those covering their cards with beans and decided he would conform the game to service a huge audience.

It was around this time that Bingo was born from Beano. Lowe had brought Beano back to his local new york city and was playing it at home when one of the ladies he was playing with called out Bingo rather than Beano. Lowe was puzzled and instantly decided that this was a better name for the game. It is indeed interesting how accidental situations meet observation and coincidence appears to look a lot more like fate.

not long after this Lowe ( who was an ardent sales representative of children's toys ) approached a mathematician to help him increase the amount of possibilities on the Bingo cards so that he could mass market the game to the general public. The mathematician did indeed create the cards for Lowe and in an engaging twist of fate where the history of bingo is concerned it is rumoured he went insane. Lowe had to pay the man in ever increasing amounts as he made more and more Bingo cards because as the amount of cards increased so did the difficulty for creating other ones. By the end of his six thousand bingo card run the mathematician was being paid over one hundred dollars per card. After his version of Bingo was finished and ready for sale Lowe was approached by a clergyman who needed to exploit Bingo as a method to raise funds for the church. This trend grew quickly and today it is surmised that ninety million greenbacks are spent every week on Bingo in north America alone. It's a great source of earnings for churches that might otherwise have difficulty fundraising.
The History Of the Bingo Game

now, 48 states offer legal bingo in some specific form. Games range all the way from those held in churches to some that will fill huge auditoriums. There was some furore regarding Bingo being legal while other forms of gambling are not. Bingo has become an extremely popular and lucrative form of entertainment in the united states and indeed around the world. Bingo is a dazzling game as it traverses generations and brings folk together old and young for a fun game that everyone can enjoy, so put your card down flat on the table, take the cap off that dabber and listen closely, your time to scream Bingo! could be near by!
