Obtaining a sponsor contract

There are still a lot of folks that work to get a sponsor contract with any minor poker room and get their tournament entry fees paid, or develop into a full time pro for a poker room and get some guaranteed money for your expenses.

It can be a way to travel the world and take part in events with the highest buy-ins.

Nevertheless, it's most useful in countries with restrictions on online gambling marketing, as it gives an opportunity for media exposure. Alternatively, if you are well-known outside of the poker world and can bring in some new blood to the poker site.

Easist way to earn a sponsor contract?

Apart from U.S.A the top choices presently are France, Spain and Italy. It could be a little harder to learn the languages and get accepted by the natives, but it may be a plan to concentrate your events in those areas. Pick one of the countries and ensure that you get some good final positions in large tournaments in that market. Since they are markets that expands very quickly there might be a poker site that are prepared to give you a chance in the hope that you end up in a picture or article someplace wearing a shirt with their logotype. It doesn't really count which poker room it is, when you achive more success you can always find a better deal somewhere else. Just ensure that you get your cash, preferbly in advance.

The most important factor is success. You don't fancy a group of finishes just outside the final table, you need to be aggressive and get the top spot. Tournament winners get more attention. If you conquer a large international tournament there should be at least one or two skins on average sized networks that will give you an offer. If you win many minor events try to make sure that they are gathered in the same market, as discussed earlier.

If you lack the bankroll to re-locate you could still make an attempt to qualify for big events in one of the indicated by playing satellites on internet. Don't forget to earn a rakeback deal on the poker sites you are playing at, to ensure you don't lose the hundreds of dollars you may earn a week on your rakeback.

Just remeber that the first contract is merely the first stage. You wish to have free business class tickets and buy-ins to every big tournaments worldwide and preferbly a little guaranteed money for writing your own blog or other PR activities.

Winning big tournaments

The objective is to win a major tourney, get a WPT, EPT or WSOP title. If you achieve that you should be set for several years, in particular if it is a televised event.

Alternatively you just have to make sure that you get a lot of attention. Play a character, that is majorr than life. Assure everybody notices you, in particular any journalists or staff from extremely large websites, so they talk to you even when you are not winning. Show up at the table with your own fan club, play the tournament in a masquerade costume. Ensure that you show emotions when you are involved in a large pot, there is not anything wrong with overreacting. Don't forget that all publicity is good publicity. Consider yourself as a brand, what do you need to do in order to get as much publicity as possible? Without a doubt, it is more desirable with positive attention, but if you can't get that ensure that you receive some kind of attention.

But, please remember that you need a good relation with your current sponsor. Many poker sites have a rather flexible attitude on ethics and morality, but there are a few uptight companies that don't want poor publicity. You don't want to lose your sponsor deal before you have found a better one. So make sure that you and your sponsor are on the same page, and that you have a collective goal: To get you as much exposure and success as possible.

Getting rich

Money is important, considering you need to be able to stash away a decent sum on a bank account. Poker players doesn't really have any pensions to look forward to, so you want to gather a fortune yourself. But publicity and the opportunity to win may sometimes be more important than the money. The WSOP Main Event is a dream for countless players and it would certainly be great to win the big one and buy a mansion in Las Vegas. But because of the number of players the chance to win are fairly small and you need to win many coin-flips on the way. If you play the Main Event without paying the buy-in yourself it might be attractive to just reach any of the paid positions, as even the smallest prizes will pay you a good sum.

But personally I would make another choice. There are attractive events like the Italian Poker Tour and even WPT events in Morocco or France where you will face easier opponents but still look forward to respectable prize pools and prestige if you win.

So, to sum it up. Assure that you leave your prestige back home when you put on your poker shirt. You don't necessarily want to play versus the most famous players in the world, you preferably want easy victories but still get a fair amount of attention in poker media. If you can solve that problem you are ready to conquer the world.

There are only 2 categories of players that have no problems to find sponsors: winners and celebrities! Assure you belong to one of those groups.
