The Casino Monte Carlo is built for and used by tourists only. In fact, citizens of Monaco are not allowed inside the gaming rooms of the facility. The royal family of Monaco can attend opera and ballet performances, but they do use an alternative entrance.
Other individuals must display a passport and pay the entrance fee before being allowed entrance to the building. Individuals wearing military uniforms are also prohibited from using the facilities of the casino. The casino is arguably the most famous of Monaco's tourist draws.
The theater was not part of the original facility, but was added in 1910. The Ballets de Monte Carlo headquarters is also located in the complex. The entire facility is part of the Monte Carlo quarter.
The restaurant located at Casino Monte Carlo is famous in its own right. It is named Le Train Bleu after the first class railroad link that has done much to increase the fortunes of both Monte Carlo and the entire principality of Monaco. The train service is first class only and adds to the excitement and the mystique of Casino Monte Carlo. The Circuit de Monaco route of the Monaco Grand Prix borders the Casino.
Gambling in the principality was legalized by Prince Florestan I with the first casino established in a villa close to the harbor. Charles III initiated the plans for a new quarter in Monte Carlo prior to 1858. The plans drawn up for the new area in Monaco included the specifications for the new casino building.
The building was designed by architect Charles Garnier in a Baroque style. Garnier's previous credits include the design of the Paris Opera. The building officially opened for business in 1863 with the fifty year concession rights granted to a private individual François Blanc.
The principal games that can be played at the casino include table games such as Roulette, Craps and Baccarat. The slot machines are available to those who prefer to try their luck there. Video poker captures the interest of many. Other players prefer the hands on type poker such as stud poker.
