Baccarat has long been a game associated with wealth and sophistication. Images of James Bond sipping brandy, casually placing thousands of dollars on the tale, to be won or lost with a simple turn of a card, come to mind when the name Baccarat is mentioned. But where did this game come from and how did it evolve into such an example of elegant living?

There is some controversy about the roots of Baccarat, but many historians agree that it most likely evolved from a game that was played with Tarot cards sometime during the middle ages. It first emerged in Italy during the 15th century much like the game is played today, using a traditional deck of cards. The popularity of Baccarat rapidly spread through the courts and became a favorite of French royalty by the 16th century. The French version of Baccarat eventually turned into European Baccarat or chemin de fer, which is usually played for high stakes.

As time passed, Baccarat was carried across the ocean to Central and South America. The game was altered somewhat into what is known today as American Style or punto banco. This version of Baccarat was found in Havana’s Capri Casino in the 1950’s, which is the version that is currently found in casinos throughout Nevada. This style of Baccarat still has room for the high stake players, but there has been also been changes to the game which were made for players who would like to play the game with a smaller bank roll.

No matter where the game is played, or no matter what style of Baccarat you decide to play, you will find that the game is basically played the same: that is, Banker vs Player. The differences in each style can mostly be found in a thing like who deals the cards, how many dealers are found at the table, and what is the basic layout of the table.

You will find that Baccarat is relaxing and a nice change of pace from the “thrills and frills” of the mainstream games in the casinos. Since it is truly a simple game of chance, the biggest decision that you will have to make is in where to place your bet. After that, the cards are dealt and all that you need do is sit back and enjoy the game. Baccarat is truly a game that can be fun for a wide variety of players, from the novice to the more experienced casino gambler. It doesn’t matter if you want to wager $5 or $5,000. The relatively low house odds give you a much better chance to emerge a winner.

One of the advantages for high rollers is that one mistake in Baccarat will not give the house a greater advantage. No matter whether you bet the Banker’s hand or the Player’s hand, you will never lose more than the 1.35 house edge. When you compare this to games like Poker or Blackjack, where making one bad decision in the heat of the game can greatly increase the house advantage, you can see and understand the allure of Baccarat.

This leisurely game has such a low house edge that it makes Baccarat a perfect place to try out a favorite betting system or new card counting strategy. So sit back and play this century old game in style! Good luck to you!
